Jazz in London V.O.

December 2012
Jazz in London V.O. The last month of the year began, as usual, in Ronnie Scotts, where every night, lunch time, and both Sunday shows were all Sold Out, well in advance, beginning with a bouncy “Motown Xmas Review”, much to the delight of a packed audience.
The 606 Club had a charming young singer, new to me, Jandira Silva. A fine vocalist, with good backing from Guille Hill (g), Matheus Nova (b), Marius Rodriguez (dm), and Carl Hudson (kb).
The next week was very enjoyable at the Vortex, where I was pleased to catch a set from one of the groups I had recommended in the London Jazz Festival, namely “GoGo Penguins”. A super young trio of Chris Illingworth (p), Grant Russell (b), and Rob Turner (dm). A Manchester based group, they will soon be a very important addition to the jazz circuit.
At the Bishopsgate Institute, trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer with his wondrous light show, plus wizard guitarist Stian Westerhus and Erland Dahlen on drums, produced an exciting evening which sometimes sounded like “Chet Baker Meets Led Zeppelin” !!! Support band gave good backing, “Eyes of a Blue Dog” (do not ask me what that means !!) with Rory Simmons (tp, g), Elisabeth Nygard (voc), and Terje Evensen (dm).
Ronnie Scotts again, with The Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra plus the wonderful singing and occasional piano playing of Liane Carroll then more vocals from Georgina Jackson.
606 Club again for very good keyboard and vocals from Mike Lindup and his rhythmic band, featuring Alex Hutchings (g).
Last gig of the year at the Vortex, for me, found legendary composer/arranger Mike Gibbs with a big band, The evening was mainly devoted to the arrangements of Gil Evans, and Gibbs’ 12 piece line up did full justice to all that was required.
My last gig at Ronnie Scott’s was for the traditional Christmas time booking of the Ray Gelato band, very much enjoyed by a festive audience. Then finally calling the year to a musical end at the Café Oto, for the trio “Konk Pack”, with Tim Hodgkinson (flat table top guitar and clarinet), Thomas Lehn analogue (synth), and Roger Turner (perc). That was the time to give up, nothing could follow the trio. So now for several days needed REST.
Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year to You All.
