Il a grandi à Greenwich dans le Connecticut. Marqué par la musique country et le rock, il était un grand fan de Chuck Berry; il apprend la guitare dès 14 ans auprès d’un professeur qui l’initie au jazz tout en découvrant Barney Kessel, Miles Davis et Dave Brubeck. De 1962 à 1966, il va suivre les cours du Berklee College of Music à Boston où il rencontre les frères Michael et Randy Brecker. Il les rejoindra en 1969 au sein du groupe Dreams où officie déjà Billy Cobham: une sorte de groupe de fusion-rhythm & blues qui colle à l’air du temps. Auparavant, il s'était produit régulièrement et avait enregistré auprès des organistes Dick Delaney (Dick Delaney Presents Hammond Organ Stylings With Rhythm, 1966) et Johnny Hammond Smith (Natsy!, 1968).

Diplôme en poche il s’installe à New York où il va jouer avec Chico Hamilton, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Dave Liebman, Barry Miles, Jeremy Steig… Il rejoint le groupe Everything is Everything qui compte dans ses rangs Reggie Workman (b), Lenny White (dm), Joe Bonner (p), Dave Liebman (ss), Steve Grossman (ts) et l’ami Randy Brecker (tp). En 1970, ils gravent l’album Just Flash in the Cosmic Pan. Il participe aussi aux groupes Stark Reality (1969, Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop, 1970) puis Friends –Mark Cohen (as), Clint Houston (b)– avec qui il enregistre son premier album en coleader (Friends, 1972). On le retrouve dans des séances pour Barry Miles (White Heat, Scat Bird), dans les sublimes albums de Gato Barbieri (Under Fire, Bolivia), puis avec Gil Evans (Plays the Music of Jimi Hendrix).

Après Dreams, il suit Billy Cobham dans son nouveau groupe et participe a deux albums-phares du batteur: Total Eclipse et Crosswinds.

En 1974, John Abercrombie, à la veille de ses deux premiers albums Timeless et Gateway pour ECM, s’est forgé une solide réputation. Pour Timeless, il est aux côtés de Jan Hammer (kb) révélé chez John McLaughlin, et de Jack DeJohnette (dm) qui est aussi présent dans Gateway, album éponyme du nom du groupe, où les deux compères ont été rejoints par Dave Holland. Sa longue association avec le label ECM démarre en 1974 et se poursuivra jusqu’à son dernier album Up and Coming (2017), soit au total plus de 40 albums, dont 26 en leader ou coleader.

Parmi ses groupes les plus notoires, on remarque Gateway, fondé en 1975, avec Dave Holland et Jack DeJohnette, dont le compagnonnage ne cessera pas au fil du temps et qui réinvente la formule du trio.

John Abercrombie est aussi le fer de lance du groupe New Directions dirigé par Jack DeJohnette. On ne peut oublier, la même année, son rôle primordial dans le quartet du trompettiste italien Enrico Rava.

On retrouve régulièrement le guitariste dans la famille du label ECM avec Ralph Towner (g) en duo (1976) rejoint par Collin Walcott (perc), en trio avec Jan Garbarek (ts) et Nana Vasconcelos… et à la codirection d’un étonnant quartet qui l’associe à Richie Beirach (p), George Mraz (b) et Peter Donald (dm).

Durant les années 80 il est toujours aussi actif et propose un nouveau groupe en trio qui l’associe à Peter Erskine (dm) et Marc Johnson (b), groupe qui assure en 1986 une très longue tournée dont plusieurs concerts en France, et qui grave l’album Current Events, devenu une référence pour chaque spécialiste des trois instruments. Le groupe se reforme en 1989 et en 1992, et accueille le saxophoniste anglais John Surman. Il collabore aussi sur des albums d’amis tels Andy Laverne (p), Danny Gotlieb (p), signe des superbes duos avec John Scofield (Solar) ou Richie Beirach (Emerald City).

Il s’offre le luxe de la réunion de guitaristes de légende avec Tal Farlow, Larry Carlton, Larry Coryell, John Scofield, soutenus par John Patitucci (b) et Billy Hart (dm) (All Strings Attached, 1987).

On le retrouve dans les années 1990 avec l’Organ Trio, veille réminiscence, avec Dan Wall (org) et Adam Nusbaum (dm), et il affectue de multiples collaborations (dont un duo acoustique) avec le pianiste Andy Laverne.

Très sollicité désormais comme enseignant, il assure de nombreuses masters-classes en Europe, aux Etats Unis qui souvent débouchent sur de nouveaux projets de créations plus locales (écoles de musique, festivals).

Les années 2000 sont toujours aussi actives et, en plus de ses tournées en leader, il participe activement à de nombreux albums avec Marc Copland, Charles Lloyd, le trio Three Guitars avec Larry Coryell et la brésilienne Babi Assad (The Paris Concert, 2004), Kenny Wheeler (tp), John Surman (bs,ss) (Brewster's Rooster), et une série de duos époustouflants avec Andy Laverne (p), John Ruocco (ts,ss), Marc Copland (p) Marek Dykta (g) et les retrouvailles avec Joe Beck (g) (Coïncidence, 2008) qui avait partagé les séances de Gato Barbieri en 1973. Le duo donne quelques concerts en Europe avant que Joe Beck s’éteigne quelques jours après cette tournée.

Durant des années, une des formules favorites de John Abercrombie est sa formation en quartet qui, au fil du temps, a changé, mais avec laquelle il a gravé sept albums entre 1979 et 2017. Depuis 2013 et l’album 39 Steps, le groupe se compose de vieux compagnons d’aventures –Marc Copland (p), Joey Baron (dm) et Drew Gress (b). Sans aucun doute, un beau quartet où seul l’échange et la sagesse semblent de mise. Avec Up and Coming enregistrée en 2017, John Abercrombie achève une carrière longue de près de cinquante ans. Outre les musiciens déjà cités, il a cotoyé: Barre Phillips, Bobby Hutcherson, McCoy Tyner, Paul Bley, Joe Lovano, Bob Brookmeyer, Tom Harrell, Jack Walrath… de nombreux musiciens européens dont Michel Petrucciani, Henti Texier, les frères Boclé… et la scène nippone.

Dans les années 1980, il expérimente la guitare-synthétiseur qu’il laissera au profit d’une guitare électrique plus traditionnelle et de la mandoline électrique. A un style très ancré dans le jazz-rock où les virtuoses se déchaînent, il préfére une approche plus légère, plus aérienne qui le démarque de ses contemporains, une sorte de voie plus apaisée. «Son jeu original se reconnaît a sa technique fluide, au délié des notes, dans la construction de savantes parties solistes, il ajoutait une maîtrise de quelques effets sonores, principalement de réverbération et de vibrato» (citation tirée du site du guitariste), certains spécialistes ont décrit un style immédiatement identifiable «comme une synthèse très personnelle de différentes influences allant de John Coltrane à Jim Hall, de Bill Evans au guitariste country John Fahey.» (site de John Abercrombie). Son expérience au sein de son quartet l’a amené à développer un son de groupe où la guitare se fond dans la synthèse totale de la musique. Dans la présentation de son quartet sa musique est ainsi défini: «Quoique très consciemment ancré dans la tradition du jazz, à travers les compositions de John, le groupe semble en effet très souvent sur le point de s’en émanciper totalement. Abercrombie, qui s’est lui-même décrit comme "un musicien free inspiré par Ornette Coleman" et un instrumentiste principalement occupé à développer un langage harmonique de la guitare jazz. Il est à l’image de son groupe: une sorte de traditionaliste aux idées d’avant-garde.» (même source)

Il est particulièrement respecté par ses pairs. Jim Hall, qui fut l’une de ses influences les plus décisives lors de ses années de formation, ne tarissait pas d’éloges: «John est unique en ce qu’il s’autorise d’évoluer et de changer constamment… J’aime son jeu parce qu’il est toujours surprenant.»

En guise d’oraison funèbre, on pourrait citer son ami et complice John Scofield: «Toute personne avec un peu d’oreille peut juger de la merveilleuse intégrité de ses improvisations et de sa maîtrise extraordinaire de cet instrument particulier qu’est la guitare électrique.» Il a participé en tant que musicien, compositeur a plus de 400 enregistrements.

John Abercrombie est décédé à son domicile de Cortland, Etat de New York. La nouvelle de sa disparition a été annoncé par sa famille puis par son label ECM. Le musicien souffrait du cœur depuis des années et avait été victime de problèmes cardiaques sérieux l’an dernier.
