Surtout célèbre pour sa très longue collaboration (de 1962 à 2008 et 53 albums) avec Sonny Rollins, le contrebassiste émérite Melbourne Robert Cranshaw aura imprimé sa marque de qualité sur près de 469 albums et donné le tempo auprès de valeurs sûres et de jeunes talents du jazz. Il fut l’un des premiers à échanger, à l’orée des années 1970, sa contrebasse pour une basse électrique, en parti à cause d’un accident de voiture mais aussi pour faire face à de nombreuses demandes professionnelles.

Son parcours croise des artistes de premiers plans tels Ella Fitzgerald, Coleman Hawkins, Johnny Hodges, Thelonious Monk, Wes Montgomery, Oscar Peterson, Buddy Rich, George Shearing, Shirley Scott, Joe Williams, Tony Bennet, Frank Sinatra et même Paul Simon… et toutes une gamme de plus jeunes novateurs devenus des légendes du jazz, Dexter Gordon, Grant Green, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, J.J. Johnson, Jackie McLean, Hank Mobley, James Moody, Lee Morgan, Kenny Barron, Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver, Stanley Turrentine, McCoy Tyner, George Benson… entre autres.

Il a aussi été le bassiste attitré de plusieurs émissions télévisés telle Sesame Street, pour les enfants, mais aussi The Electric Company et surtout le mythique Saturday Night Live (1975-1980). Il a été le directeur musical des shows The Dick Cavett Show, The Merv Griffin Show and The David Frost Show. Et si l’on écoute The Jazz Foundation, « il aurait enregistré plus de 3000 sessions, disques musiques de shows, films, émissions TV… et serait le recordman des bassistes ayant enregistré pour Blue Note.» 1

Il a été aussi durant 30 ans un membre très actif du syndicat des musiciens en tant que représentant de la section locale 802 de New York.

Après avoir démarré au piano et à la batterie, il opte au lycée pour la contrebasse et le tuba. Son premier groupe de référence en 1957, en tant que cofondateurs, sera le Walter Perkins’s MJT+3 qui compte dans ses rangs Walter Perkins (dm), Frank Strozier (as), Harold Mabern (p) et Willie Thomas (tp). Il démarre sa vie professionnelle au début des années 1950, mais c'est avec Sonny Rollins, qu’il accompagne à Chicago en 1959 lors du Playboy Jazz Festival et surtout avec l’album The Bridge en 1962, qu’il gagne ses véritables lettres de noblesse.

Il collabore également à cette époque avec le pianiste Duke Pearson, en petite formation et big band. Sans jamais avoir été un leader, il apparaît néanmoins sur une douzaine d’albums mythiques de l’histoire du jazz dont notamment The Sidewinder de Lee Morgan.

Autre employeur régulier de Bob Cranshaw, le pianiste Horace Silver qui fera appel à son talent pour onze albums et des tournées internationales en sextet, septet.

Parmi ses collaborations les plus régulières citons encore celles avec Stanley Turrentine, Shirley Scott et, sans aucun doute la plus fameuse, durant des années, celle qui l’associera à Ella Fitzgerald.

Son aîné et mentor, Sonny Rollins, aura fait appel à sa maîtrise complète de l’instrument pour se garantir un soutien essentiel durant cinq décades. A la contrebasse ou à la basse électrique, Mister Bob reste le bassiste incontournable de la carrière du saxophoniste qu’il a accompagné des clubs new-yorkais jusqu'aux plus grandes scènes mondiales. Presque chaque année, il venait honorer la France pour quelques concerts dont les plus fameux ont eu lieu sous le plafond étoilé du Grand Rex à Paris. «Bob Cranshaw, est décédé chez lui à New-York, paisiblement, suite à un cancer qu’il a réussi à dominer pendant des années», dixit sa veuve.
