La discographie d’Ella Fitzgerald, l’œuvre gravée dans la cire de cette artiste majeure, incite à l’humilité en raison de sa qualité artistique autant que de sa dimension (plus de 55 ans de carrière, des centaines de sessions d’enregistrements en leader), aussi pour sa complexité car ayant, comme les grands artistes du jazz, une carrière hors norme, on n’a jamais fini d’en découvrir de nouvelles traces et non des moindres, sans oublier les tournées ayant donné matière à des enregistrements plus ou moins officiels, malgré la vigilance de Norman Granz. La récente édition (nouveauté) des concerts parisiens d’Ella Fitzgerald du tournant des années 1960, chez Frémeaux, nous le rappelle.

Pour cette discographie, que nous souhaitons la plus complète possible (nous restons ouverts aux corrections, compléments d’informations, une discographie n’est jamais terminée), nous avons repris la méthode «Jazz Hot», pour sa lisibilité, c’est-à-dire que si nous tendons à l’indication de l’exhaustivité des titres où Ella Fitzgerald est présente, nous avons choisi de limiter les références discographiques à la référence originale (78t, 45t, LP 33t, CD) et à sa réédition la plus cohérente, en vinyles (LP) ou Compact Disc (CD), les plus facilement accessibles aujourd’hui. En 78t –en gros de 1935 à 1955, la période Decca– la référence originale se trouve sur la ligne de chaque titre, les autres références et supports (CD, LP, 45t) sont indiqués en gras en fin de chaque session.

Les sessions sont rangées par ordre chronologique. Il peut arriver qu’un même jour deux sessions aient été enregistrées, parfois avec des formations différentes; elles figurent donc sous la même date, sans interlignage, comme d’autres s’étalant sur plusieurs jours qui se suivent de près. Quand un enregistrement est indiqué sous plusieurs dates ou sur une durée, c’est que le détail n’en est pas donné.

La date est en gras, le titre du disque en gras-rouge, et le titre est repris sur la ligne de la référence pour un meilleur repérage compte tenu de l’abondance.

Les formations, parfois très étoffées, qui accompagnent Ella Fitzgerald, sont indiquées selon ce que nous avons pu réunir d’informations.

Enfin, et c’est ce qui caractérise notre travail –associant la lisibilité, le repérage et l’exactitude–, nous essayons de trouver le plus grand nombre de visuels originaux correspondant à cette production. Comme pour les références, les visuels sont innombrables, car Ella a été une excellente affaire pour l’édition phonographique au plan mondial, et les références comme les visuels sont innombrables.

Il n’y a rien à jeter dans cette splendide production, les temps relativement moins jazz par leur environnement d’orchestres à cordes (Song Books…) restant toujours très jazz par la grâce d’Ella, et indispensable à la compréhension de la cohérence de son œuvre, à l’histoire de la production, du jazz et le chemin très intelligent choisi, avec l’aide de Norman Granz, par Ella Fitzgerald, la Maria Callas du jazz, et la comparaison n’a rien d’une figure de style. Elles ont atteint toutes les deux un niveau d’expression d’une intensité, d’une vérité émotionnelle rares, assorti d’une virtuosité exceptionnelle totalement intégrée à leur expression, leur art, et cela explique le caractère populaire de leur œuvre, à tous les sens de cet adjectif.

La discographie est une autre manière de lire la vie d’un artiste et de découvrir des œuvres, à tout le moins de les redécouvrir d’un œil neuf, remises dans le contexte du parcours. Note: Mister Kelly’s était un établissement de nuit célèbre, sur Rush Street à Chicago, ouvert en tant que restaurant le 24 novembre 1953 par Pat Kelly, détenu et exploité par les frères Oscar et George Marinthal qui possédaient également à Chicago le London House. Il devint rapidement un night club. Note: lors de ces sessions au Crescendo Club qui s’étendent du 11 mai au 21 mai 1961, de nombreux titres (la plupart) sont restés longtemps inédits et des bandes inédites sont dans des collections particulières conservées à la Library of Congress (cf. Ella Fitzgerald, an Annoted Discography by J. Wilfred Johnson, partiellement en ligne).

Le coffret suivant (4 CDs) reprend tout ou partie (il n’est pas possible de le savoir) de ces inédits (3 CDs) de cet engagement au Crescendo, et pour le 4e CD une séance supplémentaire intitulée «Return to Hollywood» avec un quartet différent, enregistrée semble-t-il les 29-30 juin 1962 (cf. plus bas) dans ce même club.

A ce jour, nous ne disposons pas de ce coffret en édition limitée.

Par ailleurs, un titre, «A-Tisket, A-Tasket», enregistré le 12 mai semble avoir été édité (cf. W. Bruyninckx et J. W. Johnson), mais les références disponibles sont absentes ou semblent erronées. Il s’agit peut-être de la version qu’on retrouve sur le CD Ella Fitzgerald-Jukebox Ella: The Complete Verve Singles Vol.1, Verve 0044007605820, à l’origine édité en 45t et qui se trouve peut-être repris dans le coffret suivant de 4 CDs.
